Current Work and IP final critique

Uploads of my latest videos will be added in the next few days. My final critique committee is as follows:
Janie Paul
Nick Tobier
Carl Greene
Endi Poskovic

As I twittered earlier this evening, I feel excited and terrified. Four professors, all of whom I have a great deal of respect for.

Projected Animation

Tested a projected animation using my $10 Identity object. Unfortunately I only have still images, not video, but this could definitely be something I include in my final time-based project. Serves as good raw material. The animation is an expression of inner turmoil.

Studies for film

Two studies for two film images I plan to shoot - each study focuses on a figure in a certain environment. The first is of a shot of the Catherine St. bus stop in Ann Arbor, meant to represent travel; and the second takes place in Friday discussion section.

Stephen Wilson

Stephen Wilson is a professor at San Francisco State University, and had made interesting work combining artistry and virtual reality. Of particular interest to my IP are projects that use computers to tell a fictional narrative story that is influenced by an audience. In his 1998 installation, Crime-Z-Land, Wilson combines interactivity via computers, with real time statistical information to give the user a sense of the "pulse" of San Francisco crime.

New Media Scotland

I talked to Professor John Marshall yesterday about incorporating an internet element into my IP. One of the resources John suggested was New Media Scotland. They have interesting works, and I hope to learn more about internet art soon.

La Jetee

French film made in 1963. Beginning of the clip is literally what I hope to achieve with my thesis project. Using black & white photos to "animate" family memories.

Sophie

I'm Looking at artists who use black & white photography to create a narrative. With this image, Sophie Calle is documenting an artistic statement. In doing so, she tells a story, from beginning to end, of a stranger entering her personal space.

Dream Squirrel

Dream Squirrel is a film I made my Freshman year at Michigan. Although the film relies on a popular music song for much of its emotional punch, I like the use of still photographs and want to explore that in my thesis project.

Itami Film Festival

My project is moving more toward a series of shorter films that will be compiled on a website. Many websites exist that compile "How to" videos. Here is one example on http://www.wonderhowto.com. This example is an award winning film about the process of creating stop motion animation.

Watercolor Figure

Gesture and watercolor figure drawings. The idea of the darker paint is to represent the contour of the figure receding into space.

Sketching Website

Website for a studio class that documents the 15 minute sketches I do each day. Working with html and css coding was a cool process, and I have grown to love Adobe Dreamweaver.

Zen in the Art

Writer Ray Bradbury loves to write, and fortunately he loves to write about writing. His essays are inspiring, recently getting me out to a kitchen in Kerrytown to do 30 minutes of gesture drawing. He suggests a passion and gusto in writing, and that staying true to your deepest loves and hates will get you through a lifetime. In other words, he is suggesting that to be an artist, you must speak as yourself.

Ray is a communicator - he makes his readers feel the same passion that he feels for his own life and art.

Deadline

Approaching my first deadline: final written treatment of my thesis film. Pretty challenging process actually, and much more about the thought process than generating art material. I will keep you updated.

IP project

IP is going well. The school year is starting to pick up, which is good, because I have started to picture myself scrambling at the end of the year. I don't like sleepless nights.

Staying on top

Blurt: Having too much fun; art truly isn't fun.
Affirmation: Oh, but it is. Joy comes from a true effort at art.

IP Character

Initial design influenced by Japanese video games.

Storyboard and char design

A few storyboards for an adaptation of The Sword in the Stone.

Anim critique

A 2.5 second animation I made to be projected onto a jewelry box.

My first and second post

Worried that I spent too much studio time trying to find a great name for my blog... The whole exercise of writing a blog is important for an artist - a way to find your true voice. My first steps are shaky...
